The town is centred around the main square (platea) and the old town, while to the south is the beach boulevard (paralia) and the waterfront. In general the locals gravitate toward the beach front in the summer and then retreat to the town during the off season. Kalamata has shops, cafés, restaurants, a farmers market (agora – open every Wednesday and Saturday) but also sites such as the castle, Ypapandi Cathedral and Agios Apostolous church where the Greek independence began in 1821. The beach boulevard (Navarinou) stretches 4km end to end, with a host of beach bars, cafes, restaurants and tavernas. You will find a list of favourite establishments in your room. Kalamata is a 20 min drive – 16km from KITO.
